Matchday 4 captaincy: Tuesday’s crowded field

Tuesday’s problem is picking among several credible captains. Putting the candidates into a strict ranking would suggest more certainty than the evidence supports, so the better question is which matchups and recent returns suit your appetite for risk.

Luis Suárez (€7.3m) offers one practical edge: Sporting CP play Shakhtar Donetsk in the early kickoff, giving managers a chance to see whether he starts before making their captaincy call. He has scored in each of his first three Champions League games, though Sporting will be looking to respond after losing 3-2 to LASK.

Barcelona’s attack also deserves serious consideration at home to Aston Villa. The club is averaging 4.2 goals per La Liga match and 3.7 in the Champions League, and ranks among the leading teams for projected goals. Those numbers make a Barcelona attacker an appealing choice, but they don’t settle which one to back.

Lamine Yamal (€10.2m) has two goals and four assists in three Champions League appearances. That record points to a high ceiling, especially for managers chasing a big return. Raphinha is back from injury and brings a different kind of case: his 15 goals and three assists lead all midfielders in domestic competition, and he has scored three times in his last two appearances.

Harry Kane (€11.1m) may draw less attention, but dismissing him because Bayern face Atlético Madrid would be a mistake. He scored 50 times across the Bundesliga and Champions League last season. In Bayern’s previous European match against Arsenal, he managed a goal, an assist and the Player of the Match award despite the difficult opposition. The fixture is awkward on paper; Kane’s record says that alone isn’t enough reason to pass.

Wednesday: Mbappé leads the case

Wednesday has a clearer captaincy favourite. Real Madrid arrive on a five-match winning streak and have scored four goals in each of their last two Champions League games. Their opponent, AEK Athens, lost 3-1 to Shakhtar Donetsk and then 5-1 to Manchester City. That defensive record gives Madrid a strong chance to score freely again.

Kylian Mbappé (€11.0m) is the obvious way to back that attack. He has 16 goals and three assists for club and country this season, and has recorded at least two goal contributions in three of his past four appearances. The numbers make him the standout Wednesday captain, though any captaincy pick still carries the usual matchday risk.

Wednesday alternatives for managers willing to gamble

Erling Haaland (€11.2m) is the most direct alternative. Manchester City beat AEK 5-1, and Haaland has scored twice in each of his Champions League starts this season. City now face Leipzig, who conceded four against Madrid last round. That’s a compelling matchup, even if switching from Mbappé means passing up Madrid’s own attacking form.

Serhou Guirassy (€8.6m) has scored braces in two of his Champions League appearances, and Dortmund host a Real Betis defence described as vulnerable. He is also among the leading forwards for projected points this week. That combination makes him a plausible differential, though the available figures don’t establish how likely another big haul is.

Como’s Nico Paz (€7.0m) offers several routes to points against Lens, who have conceded at least twice in every Champions League match so far. Paz arrives after a 20-point performance featuring two goals, an assist and the Player of the Match award. Alexander Isak (€7.5m) and Bradley Barcola (€7.1m) are further attacking options against an inconsistent Fenerbahçe defence.

For a less conventional armband, Arsenal defender Gabriel (€6.0m) faces Slavia Praha. He can collect through a clean sheet, ball recoveries or attacking returns. That’s a broader path to points than backing a forward, but it also depends on several things going right.

UCL Fantasy returns for Matchday 4, giving managers fresh chances to gain ground through captaincy. Tuesday’s fixtures offer a crowded group of strong candidates; Wednesday’s slate points more clearly to Mbappé, with several high-upside alternatives for anyone prepared to take on more risk.
